Mobile-Friendly Website Design: A Practical Small-Business Checklist

A mobile-friendly website should be easy to understand and use without zooming, horizontal scrolling, or carefully aiming at tiny controls. For many customers, the phone version is the first—and sometimes only—version of a business website they will see.

Start with the customer’s main task

Decide what mobile visitors are most likely to do: call, request a quote, check services, find a location, or buy something. Place that action prominently and remove distractions that compete with it.

Use readable text

Body text should be comfortable to read on a small screen, with sufficient line spacing and contrast. Headings should wrap cleanly without being clipped or pushing the page wider than the viewport.

Make controls easy to tap

Buttons, menu items, form fields, and links need adequate size and spacing. Important actions should not depend on hover behavior, which touchscreens do not provide consistently.

Prevent horizontal overflow

Large images, fixed-width containers, long headings, tables, and embedded content can extend beyond the screen. Every important page should be tested at several narrow widths rather than at only one device size.

Keep forms short

Ask only for information needed to respond. Use appropriate field types, clear labels, useful validation messages, and a visible confirmation after submission.

Check speed and stability

Resize and compress images, limit unnecessary scripts, and avoid layout shifts that move buttons or text while the page loads. Test on a real phone and a slower connection when possible.
